Abstract
Objectives: - The aim of this research was to evaluate different disorders of sleep in patients with type I diabetes mellitus. Background: - Diabetic patients frequently exhibit inadequate sleep practices. This sleep disruption may have an inverse effect on the progression of the disease and complications development. Methods:- This case-control study was conducted on 35 patients with type I diabetes mellitus who had an average body build and 10 age-matched non-diabetic control group who attended the Sleep Unit in the Chest Diseases Department in Menoufia University Hospital from December 2022 to February 2024. A comprehensive examination, history-taking, A STOP-Bang questionnaire, Epworth sleepiness scale, and nocturnal polysomnography were performed on each participant. After submission of an informed written consent. Results: - The results of this study showed that there were statistically significant variations between cases and controls as regards:- A\H index, obstructive apnea index, hypopnea index, desaturation index, periodic limb movements, the duration of N1, N3, and REM stages, sleep latency, sleep efficiency, and wakefulness after sleep onset (WASO) (P-values < 0.01). However, statistically, there were no significant differences between the central apnea index and sleep stage N2. Conclusion: - Type I diabetes mellitus patients are more susceptible to sleep disturbances, reduced sleep quality, and sleep respiratory disorders.
