Abstract

Objectives: To assess aesthetic outcome of modified lateral intercostal artery perforator flap in partial breast reconstruction after lateral breast cancer excision. Background: Lateral quadrant tumors of breast in patients candidate for conservative surgery may lead to deformity or asymmetry when compared to other side especially in larger defects and small breast. Modified lateral perforator flap provide good option for this cases with possibility to harvest lateral fatty tissue depending on vascular pedicle to compensate the defect. Methods: In This prospective study twenty female patients with operable lateral quadrants breast cancer candidate for conservative breast surgery were included. Preoperative assessment of tumor and defect size width of flap as well as sites of perforators by duplex scanning were done. Results In the studied group body mass index ranged from (18.61 – 29.53). Tumor size mean (2.16±1.25). In 12 patients the tumor was in upper lateral quadrant and in 8 patients is located in lower lateral quadrant. Two patients have seroma and 2 patients have wound necrosis at donor site. No limitation of arm movement was observed in studied group. Two patients were not satisfied by result due to seroma development and need for aspiration for one month. Concliosion The Modified lateral perforator flap restore breast volume, improve vascularity of flap with better patient satisfaction. It is particularly useful with larger defects or when better flap mobility and perfusion are required.
